Writing clear, conversational screen content for an accounting application
I wrote screen-by-screen content that helps users of a web and mobile accounting application understand the how to use the accounting software. I worked with product owners and designers before new features were released.
At a glance
Role: UX WriterClient: An accounting software company
Platforms: Web and mobile application
Worked with: Product owners and designers
Duration: 3 months
The challenge
Accounting can be confusing for people who aren’t accountants. The client
needed simple, confident content on every screen to guide users through the
accounting software on both web and mobile.
What I did
- Met
with product owners to understand the content needs and technical details
of features before they were released
- Explored
the application myself to learn its existing style and brand voice, so new
content matched what users already saw
- Worked
with designers so the words fit the layout and made each screen easier to
use
- Pictured
the end users as personas and wrote in conversational language they would
understand
- Took
part in group review discussions to refine the content with the wider team
What I learned about leading
As the project had a short duration, I had less chance to show my work, and prove
myself. It taught me to give people room to show what they can do and to judge
them by their work, not by first impressions.
Skills shown: UX writing, conversational tone,
working with designers and product owners, user personas, brand voice
